Guess Who's 6 Months Old?!

It's my blog's half birthday! GReads was born on September 26, 2010.  I know 6 months is not a huge milestone, but for me.. it is!  I had no idea what so ever that this little book blog of mine would turn in to this.  I was just a 20-something year old girl who reads books (a lot) & wanted a place to share my thoughts & opinions on what I read.  If someone happened to stumble across this blog, then great!  Well 6 months later... 500-something people stumbled upon it!

HUGE thanks to y'all (yes, I'm a Texan) for coming back & supporting me through these past few months.  I put a lot of time in to GReads & I hope it shows.  I do it because I love it.  I'm not an aspiring writer.  I do not work (or want to work) in the publishing industry.  I'm not after free books. I'm just a girl who loves books.. so, so much.  The friends that I have "met" along the way in this process is what I treasure most.  It's amazing to find people & connect with them based on your passions in life.  The book blogging community has some of the most sincere & down to earth people that I have come to love.

If you have the time, take a few minutes & treat yourself to a cupcake in honor of GReads turning 6 months old today!!  I know I will :-)

A Letter to my Readers...

Dear GReads Followers (& lurkers),

As some of you know, I am currently in school - taking classes to receive my degree in Education so that I can teach America's youth!  A new semester has fallen upon me & with that comes the shifting of priorities.  Don't freak out - this blog is in no way closing up shop!  I refuse to let that happen.  However, my reading time will become less frequent.  I'm sad to even admit that.  But it's the truth.  My books will be more about special education & math formulas, rather than young love & the paranormal.  I wish there was a way to be graded on the later because I would definitely be scoring all A's!!

This blog has been a huge motivation for me to want to succeed in my desire to go back to school.  Not only do I want to teach, but I want to teach READING to middle grade students!!  This excites me more than you know.  So with that being said, I must do well in my classes & for the time being they will come first.  But like everything else in my life these days - BRING ON THE CHALLENGE!  I somehow do better when my plate is over flowing.

I will continue to schedule posts as I have been & you can always find me on twitter (@GReadsBooks).  I can't promise how quickly my reading will happen though, or how fast my reviews will be thrown out there.  I hope you continue to keep following my blog!   I am super excited about some upcoming things in February with GReads, so be on the look out for those posts in the weeks to come.  If you ever just want to say, "Hey! What's Up?" you can always email me too :-) (GReadsBooks(at)gmail(dot)com)  Thanks for taking the time to read this letter... you're awesome, you know that?!

City of Bones Giveaway!

After reorganizing my book shelves recently, I noticed that I have TWO copies of City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Well, there is no need for me to have two! So what better way to get rid of one copy? Host a giveaway for my lovely blog readers!

City of Bones is the first book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.  The magical world of Shadowhunters is introduced to us; filled with mystery, romance, humor, & tons of intrigue!

This is an excellent series if you have not read it yet & I am so, so happy to be sharing this book with one lucky winner!  I can't tell you how many times I have recommended this book to someone - it's THAT good!  And for those who know the story, totally understand my love for Jace.  We are secretly married (but shhh! don't tell Clary).

The 4th book in this series, City of Fallen Angels, is due out later this spring - so what better way to promote it than to introduce the book that started it all!

Rules for Giveaway:
*Open to U.S. & Canada residents only
*One entry per person
*Giveaway ends Friday, January 21, 2011

Discussion: Recipe for Hotness!

After a very comical discussion with my good friend Anna from Anna Reads, I started thinking - what makes a male character in YA books so incredibly swoon worthy?!  A part of me feels silly for even thinking about these boys on these terms, because lets not forget.. we're WOMEN having inappropriate thoughts about BOYS.  But this is literature, and anything & everything goes - right?! So there's no need to feel guilty; it's not like I'm seeking out these boys at the local high school!  It's just my inner-teenage girl swooning & possibly drooling ;-)

1 part chiseled abs
(preferably the "I didn't try for these" look)
1 part bad-boy with a reputation
1 part damaged & needs some TLC
1 part hero, always there to save the day
1 part sarcastic with a dry sense of humor
1 part irresistible eyes & finger tangling hair
2 parts sensitive to others needs

Extra ingredients:
bakes cupcakes!

So tell me: What are the ingredients for YOUR
recipe of hotness when it comes to male YA characters?

My Hopes & Dreams for 2011

As 2010 comes to a close, it's giving me time to reflect back on the year & to think ahead to what's to come in 2011.  I started my book blog, GReads, just a few short months ago. It's become such a huge part of my life now, & I can only imagine what it will be like in just a year's time!  There's a few "hopes & dreams" that I have for GReads in 2011...

  • Read! Read! Read! I know this is the obvious resolution, but it's one I intend to follow through with - 100%!  I refuse to limit my reading time, unless it starts to interfere with my job, school work, or family matters.  Then of course reading gets put on the back burner.
  • Blog as much or as little as I want to!  This is MY blog & I have every right to publish what I choose on it, as often as I want to.  I know my friends tease me that I crank out so many posts in so little time.  I started to second guess myself on that, should I be posting so much? But you know what - who cares?? I'll keep sharing my thoughts & ideas for whoever wants to read it.
  • Stick with a layout longer than a month. Ha! I know this sounds silly, but it's true.  I really need to quit changing the look of GReads so much.  I guess I'm still trying to find that perfect outfit? Nothing seems to fit!  But then again, I am forever changing my moods & my likes.. so of course that means I'll always be changing the look of GReads too.  I'd like to pick an identity & stick with it though.  Or maybe my forever changing identity IS my identity?!
  • Attend more YA events.  I will admit, I chicken-ed out on a lot of really cool events this past year because I didn't want to go alone.  Well now that I've met a few awesome book bloggers who live in town, I don't have an excuse!  We shall attend more events together! It's a must.
  • Keep ENJOYING what all of this is about.  I hope I never, ever lose sight of that.  When this becomes more like a "job" than a hobby of mine, then I may have to reconsider a few things.  I love to read, and I love to share my thoughts & opinions with others about what I read.  I have "met" some pretty amazing people through this process & I adore each & every one of you.  There's just something magical about being able to connect with someone when it comes to literature.  In some ways, I feel like I've found my place among this crazy world!

So tell me.. what are some of your Hopes & Dreams when it comes to 2011??  I would love to hear what you all are looking forward to in the upcoming year!  Just think - a new year brings new beginnings. The pages have not yet been written for you, so tell your story the way you want to!  Someone out there wants to read it ;-)

Merry Christmas from GReads!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the books
Not a blogger was stirring, not even their nooks!
The wish lists were hung by the chimneys with care,
In hopes that Saint Nicholas would fulfill their prayer.
The bloggers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of vampires, werewolfs, & faeries danced in their heads.

Wishing you a very magical & blessed Christmas this year!!
Spend this time with the ones you love & enjoy
their company this Holiday season! I will be busy with
my family, but hope to get in some reading time too!

Merry Christmas!

Readers' Choice Awards 2010

I feel very honored & appreciative right now for being nominated in the category of Best New Blog 2010 for the Readers' Choice Awards, hosted at Mindful Musings

I started this book blog just a few short months ago, never even considering how much I would grow to enjoy doing something like this.  My passion for reading has sparked a huge fire inside of me.  It's gotten me out of some pretty dark days & on to a much lighter & greater path!  Being able to share this experience with you all is truly what inspires me.  I am ever so grateful for those who happen to stumble upon my book blog, as well as the faithful followers who continue to keep coming back.  YOU are the reason why I keep pushing forward with this little "hobby" of mine.

So THANK YOU for considering GReads as Best New Blog.  I am definitely nominated with some other outstanding blogs.  Be sure & click here to see them all & cast your votes!

Book Blogger Meet-Up

Since I started book blogging, I've gotten to know quite a few other book bloggers through twitter.  Just so happens, 2 of them live right here in Houston!  Maria from Cari's Book Blogs and Cynthia from A Blog About Nothing.  Both fantastic ladies!  I had a really great time meeting up with them to discuss books, the blogging world, and everything in between!  Sometimes I feel like an outsider with my family & friends when it comes to books because none of them share the same interests as me.  So it's always nice to find people & connect with them about what you read.  I really do think the book blogging community has some of the nicest people :-)

Our date started at Borders, where Maria and I browsed every YA shelf at least 3 or 4 times!  Picking up books we've read or want to read.  Asking the other person what they thought of it or suggesting new books to read.  After Cynthia joined us, we continued our date to The Cupcakery.  A very cute, & delicious cupcake bakery!  If you know me, then you know how much I adore cupcakes - especially fancy ones!  We devoured our cupcakes - some did anyway, while others cherished the crumbs (ahem! Cynthia! hehe) - all while chit chatting away.  It was the perfect afternoon to get to know them.  Like I said before, it was a great first meet-up & I look forward to more soon!

From left to right:

and yes - that was a GIANT Christmas tree behind us!

Fancy & delicious cupcakes!

End of 2010 Survey

Jamie at The Perpetual Page-Turner has created a survey for book bloggers to fill out, categorizing their favs & not-so-favs of 2010.  After giving it some much needed thought, I decided to fill out my own survey!  Keep in mind not all these books were published in 2010.  They are books that I happened to stumble across & read during this past year.

Best Book of 2010: The Duff by Kody Keplinger.  I've heard either people like this book, or they hate it.  I absolutely LOVED it.  I think it's because I related so much to the story.  I knew this girl back in high school, she was me.  I always felt like the "ugly one" among my friends and felt like no guy would want me.  It wasn't until college that I started to follow in Bianca's (the main character) foot steps.  I thought that being intimate with someone was the way to win their heart, unfortunately.  I realize now how unbelievably wrong that is.  We learn from our mistakes, and we grow from them.  I would not take back those years because they are a part of who I am today.  This book reminded me of who I used to be, and how far I've come.  When a book can speak to me that way, it's unbelievable.

Most Disappointing Book of 2010: Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver.  I had heard such great things about this book & so I was very eager to read it myself.  Perhaps the bar was set a little too high?  The story fell flat for me (no pun intended) & I found it hard to finish.  I was bored with it & could not connect to the characters.  However - I am not totally faulting the author, I think she has a lot of potential & I want to read more from her.

Most Surprising Book of 2010: The Host by Stephenie Meyer.  I was petrified to pick up this book simply for it's volume. Seriously, it's like a million pages long.  But after some prodding by a very good friend of mine, I gave in & took the challenge head on.  My good friend told me, "get through the first 200 pages & you'll LOVE it!"  I thought, what?! I have to get through 200 first?  But.. she was right!  This book surprised me at how quickly it sucked me in (200 pages later) and how much I needed to know how it all ended.  If you're not a fan of Stephenie Meyer due to her Twilight series - I suggest grabbing this book. It could change your mind!

Book You Recommended to People Most in 2010: Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson.  I loved this book more than words can say.  The characters were believable, the story was heart-warming, & the added bonus of an actual travel log with playlists for this grand adventure across the U.S. was genius!  I think I told everyone in the book blogging community about it's awesomeness - at least twice.

Best Series You Discovered in 2010: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  Yes, I was late showing up to this party.  After numerous recommendations from a friend, I finally decided to give it a go.  And boy was I glad I did!  This world that Collins has created is thought-provoking & endless.  She touched on so many emotions for me that no other book has before.  When I finished Mockingjay my first reaction was, WHAT?! But then after some heavy thinking, I realized - WOW! that was incredible.

Favorite New Authors You Discovered in 2010: Simone Elkeles.  I discovered her books earlier this year & started following her on facebook.  I noticed how she really reached out to her fan-base & made an effort to reply to comments & emails.  Maybe I'm not as experienced with authors, but I thought that was awesome!  She also really respects the profession of teaching, and coming from a soon-to-be-teacher, I REALLY respect that!  Plus her books are fabulous!!

Most Hilarious Read of 2010: Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan.  I'm not sure I've ever read a book before where I was literally laughing out loud.  Sure, there's been a smile & a chuckle here & there - but with this book, I was almost busting at the seams.  The writing is very witty & comical, and the story has such a feel-good aspect to it.

Most Un-put-downable Book in 2010: Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick.  I was eager for the follow-up to Hush, Hush so I knew I'd fly threw this book once I finally got my hands on it.  This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.  It was like one big roller coaster too!  One thing would happen, and then something else would happen & I just couldn't seem to put the book down!  I plowed through it in one day's worth of work - oops!

Book You Most Anticipated in 2010: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare and Linger by Maggie Stiefvater.  I can not choose between the two.  I had their release dates marked on my calendar months in advance.  Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite YA paranormal authors.  After reading her Mortal Instruments series the previous year, I was missing so much of her writing!  I love that Clockwork Angel is based in the same world, yet we're introduced to new characters to fall in love with.. all over again!  As for Linger, you are crazy if you weren't looking forward to this book after reading Shiver.  I had to know what happened next!!!

Favorite Book Cover You Read in 2010: The View from the Top by Hillary Frank.  Though this book was not a favorite of mine, it still holds the place as my favorite book cover for this year.  I really love the small print & the different type.  This "view" in particular is a scene in the book & I really like when a publisher does that.  I want to be there, on that ferris wheel, at that beach.

Most Memorable Character in 2010: Katniss from The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.  For obvious reasons: her strength, her selfless-ness, and above everything.. her HEART.  The final book in this series lingered with me for days after I finished reading it.  A lot of that had to do with Katniss.  I just could not fathom losing everything in my world (literally) and still finding the will to go on.  Powerful stuff.

Book That Had the Biggest Impact on You in 2010: Speak by Laurie Halse-Anderson.  If you've read this book, then you know exactly what I am talking about.  The subject matter for this book is intense: teenage rape.  A girl feels like she can't speak up about the actions that have been done to her.  Actions so terribly horrifying that I found it hard to keep reading in some places.  I had heard of this book, but did not read it until it was listed as a "ban book" for some middle grade & high schools.  There was an article written by a man (that I can not think of his name now!) stating that this book is not appropriate for young readers and that it should be taken out of the hands of public schools.  First of all: no books should be banned!  It is the reader's decision if they can read something (and obviously the parent's decision if the reader is under-age).  And second: this book's message is profound.  It teaches young girls that you CAN speak up when something like this happens & that you SHOULD speak up.  Why deprive our youth of this?  Just because sex is mentioned?  Guess what.. they've heard of sex before.  I used this man's article for a paper I wrote in my Education class this semester.  So yeah - this book left a pretty huge impact on me.

Book That You Can Not Believe You Waited UNTIL 2010 to Read: Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.  Yes, I am late to this party too!  I am currently in the midst of reading these books, but they are complete awesomeness!  They bring me back to my days of Twilight - my first love affair with a vampire series.  I'm sad I did not pick these up sooner, but then again I picked the best time because the 6th & final book just came out!  That means I don't have to wait to know what happens next. So nice.

New Favorite Book Blog in 2010: I just started book blogging this year, so every book blog could be my new favorite!  However there are a handful of amazing book blogs I frequent often:

FULL OF AWESOME

That is what today has been.. FULL OF AWESOME!  Have you ever just had something really amazing & fulfilling happen to you all in one day? It may not be much to others.. but it's put the biggest smile on my face!  And since I feel so close to my book blogger friends, I thought I'd share this awesomeness with y'all :-)

1. I met my 10 pound weight loss goal today!  For those who don't know, I've been doing the Biggest Loser Challenge with my family.  Going in to this, I knew I wasn't going to lose the most.  But I wanted to at least try.  I set out to lose 10 pounds & I've done just that! So, so happy about this!  Now I am determined to lose even more...

2. I scored an 86 on my Math Final!  Going back to school this semester was a bit scary, but I knew I could do it if I really put my mind to it.  So proud of myself for studying hard & seeing positive results. One more final tomorrow & I am home free!

3. Richelle Mead's signature on my copy of Last Sacrifice!  My amazing older sister went to her book signing in Georgia tonight (totally last minute btw) and got Last Sacrifice signed for me!!  She didn't know whether to put Ginger or GReads! haha  I would have been happy with either one :-)

Like I said.. it may not be much to others, but these 3 little things have been HUGE for me!  I think we're quick to point out the negatives in our day & don't always appreciate the good stuff too.  Hopefully this blog post will remind you of some awesomeness happening in your own lives :-)

Survey Says! Holiday Edition 2010

Jess at Jess Hearts Books started this fun Holiday survey that I wanted to continue over here at GReads!  Please feel free to fill this out too & post a link back in the comments!

1.) Favorite holiday destination?
I've never been anywhere for Christmas other than home, but if I had the opportunity to travel I'd like to visit some place with SNOW! One of these days I'll have my white Christmas :-)

2.) Favorite ornament or decoration?
Two Christmases ago my sister gave me an ornament with my nephew Jude's footprint on it, his first Christmas! That ornament will always be special to me :-)

3.) What are you doing for the holidays?
I am not 100% certain of my plans right now.  On Christmas Eve I will probably spend it with my sisters & then on Christmas day I will be with them at my dad's house.  We open gifts in the morning & then usually share a meal together.  Having the time off from work & school will be a blessing!

4.) Are you a late or early Christmas shopper?
My shopping depends on my paydays :-)  I am never one of those people who shop months in advance.  In fact I waited til this weekend to complete my shopping lists!

5.) Who usually cooks holiday dinners?
Growing up it used to be my mother.  But now that she is no longer with us, we've made it a group effort.  Depending on who is hosting the dinner, they usually do a large portion of it.. but each one of us still contributes.

6.) Do you live where it snows?
No :-( and this makes me very sad.  People who get snow tell me I'm crazy & to be lucky that I don't have it.  Having an actual winter would be nice though!  Wearing short sleeves & flip flops on Christmas just doesn't seem right to me & never has.

7.) One thing that makes you happiest at christmas?
Being with my family.  A few years ago everyone was scattered across the world, literally.  Christmas was the one time of the year we'd all come together & spend time with one another.  Since my mom has passed, I've come to realize the importance of these moments with my family.  They come & go so fast.

8.) What do you want most for Christmas?
I think I stopped asking Santa for presents a few years ago lol.. but if I got to ask for ANYTHING it would be a plane ticket :-)  I have so many friends that live far away from me that I would love to go & visit.  The problem would be choosing the destination though.

9.) What's your favorite holiday drink?
I always see recipes for fun holiday drinks & I want to try them, but never do!  Right now Starbucks holiday drinks are probably my fav: Peppermint Mocha, Gingerbread Latte, & Pumpkin Spice.. MmmMmm!

10.) Favorite Christmas song?
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas..." - Coldplay's version! LOVE it.

11.) Favorite Christmas film?
Polar Express :-) I just bought it for my nephew for Christmas!  I also love The Holiday, Elf, and Love Actually.

12.) Favorite Christmas book?
I'm not sure I have one.. but I did just read Dash & Lily's Book of Dares and even though it isn't about Christmas, it's set during that time of year - and I absolutely LOVED it.  Read it if you haven't already.

13.) What is at the top of your list this Christmas?
Besides my sister's fudge?! lol  Money. I know that sounds boring, but really.. it's what I want! and need!

14.) What is most important to you about the holidays?
I've said it before.. Family :-) and I don't just mean the blood-related kind.  My family goes far & between!  Being able to give back at this time of year is also very important to me.  I know I can't do much (money wise) but I do recognize those who have helped me in the past & try to pay-it forward with someone else.

What's your #?

Mine is 52.
You may be asking, number for what?  Well the question is: how many books have you read in 2010?  This is the first time I've actually kept count (even though I had to go back through my shelves & lists to make sure).  I've never really cared before "how many" books I've read.  But I wanted to find out & now I am curious as to how many books you've read to date in 2010.

This is my current reading pile.  Will I finish it before 2010 ends? probably not.  I have a few more books to add to this pile before the year is done anyway!  There's a few books in this pile that I started & did not finish, which needs to be done sometime... next year?
