Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2013

This week's Top Ten Tuesday prompt is discussing bookish goals for 2013.  When a new year rolls around, we tend to look ahead and think of all the things we want to accomplish.  So why not apply it to your reading habits as well?  Here are a few of my personal bookish goals that I am setting for myself this year.

Be sure to check out The Broke and the Bookish for more details on this awesome weekly feature.

This Week's Top 10: Bookish Goals for 2013

1. Read for quality, not quantity.  Even though I've challenged myself to read a certain amount of books this year, I'm not going to stress over meeting that number.  I'd much rather take my time reading the books for their words, and not focus on rushing through it to get on to the next one.

2. Give some love to the books on my shelf.  I'm guilty of purchasing a book, or checking one out from my library, before I've checked my shelves.  There are still a ton of stories I own, just waiting to be read.  I really need to make a better effort of not neglecting those so much.

3. Visit my library more.  Just this past year I got a library card.  I know. WHAT?! Well, I have no excuse.  But you better believe I've been visiting that place almost weekly!  Which isn't going to help my above goal, ha.

4. Donate the books I've read.  I really want to make this happen.  I've looked into a local youth shelter who accepts books, and so therefore I'd like to get a few boxes packed up and bring them my books.  I love the idea of sharing stories with others who may not have the opportunity to obtain them.

5. Don't be afraid to review a book that didn't hit the spot for me.  It's so much easier to gush about the books we love, but what about the books that didn't capture our hearts?  I still have opinions and thoughts about them, so why shouldn't I review them?  You can still be respectful and write an honest review.

6. Continue to read more adult books.  Oh how I adore the historical romances I've been reading lately!  I hope to continue reading these books, as well as my YA titles.  I think it's healthy to shake up your reading genre from time to time.  It definitely keeps things interesting.

7. Finish the Harry Potter audiobooks.  Toward the end of last year, I discovered that my library had the Harry Potter books on audio to check out.  I fell in love with the narration of these books.  If you have not listened to them on audio, I highly recommend doing so.  I'll be starting book 4 soon!

8. Attend more bookish events.  2013 is not looking too good for travel, but I am hoping to visit more local book events when they come to town.  Texas has been very blessed with an awesome turn out for these things, which I am so thankful for.

9. Reread a favorite if I want to.  I keep saying that I want to read The Sky is Everywhere, Wanderlove, or How to Kill a Rock Star again... but then never do.  So this year I want to just DO IT.  Make it happen.

10. Have someone read a book because of my review/recommendation.  I would like to think I'm already doing this, but it's always such an awesome feeling when someone comes to you and tells you they read a book based on your rave reviews for it, and ended up loving it!

  1. I love how your numbers 2 and 3 are somewhat contradicting haha. And I agree that causing someone else to fall in love with a book is wonderful :) It's such an awesome feeling! Good luck with your goals this year!!

  2. "Read for quality, not quantity." I really like that. You are right, it is all about quality.

  3. #1 is a goal of mine also. I rather read a small amount of awesome books than tons of crappy ones. Good luck with your goals this yr. Feel free to check out and View My TTT

  4. Number 5 is a great goal. I used to be really good about this but received some not-so-nice responses from some authors and just decided I had had enough and would only review if I didn't hate the book.

I too need to give some more love to the books I already own. I have so many that I've had for years and have yet to read. Maybe this will be the year.

  6. I really like your list. I definitely want to attend more bookish events, but especially get a library card. I could save so much money! I don't know why I haven't gotten a library card in my new town yet(new being a relative term, since I've been there for three years). Maybe I'm scarred from all the fines I had to pay as a child when I was constantly turning books in late? Hopefully that will not happen again.

  7. I have read SO many books based on your recommendation, but the one that I remember is Easy! Seriously though, you can rest easy (see what I did there!) with the knowledge that your #10 is totally going to happen.

I'm really glad you started reading more adult novels! Sometimes it's nice to take a break from YA and read something for adults. Historical romances are AWESOME.

I also absolutely LOVE your first resolution because it's so true! I want to read and fully SUBMERGE myself in what I'm reading.

  9. I love these goals. Especially the first one. I need to keep that one in mind throughout the year.

I also need to get a library card...I feel like the worst book lover ever because I don't own one.

  10. I really like your #5. I really enjoy knowing what people disliked about books. I think negative reviews should be done tastefully because I mean, there's an author out there who is probably going to see it, but I think if done well - maybe it could help the author to grow too. I really admire when people take a stand and say, "Ya know, this really didn't work for me because xyz" even though everyone else has given it glowing reviews. It helps point out things I may have completely overlooked.

xo, love your goals! YAY HARRY POTTER!

  13. I love the HP audio books! Funny story: My family listened to them on the 10+ hour drive down to Disney World, and when we got to the parks the first day, we had to finish the audio chapter before we would get out of the car to go INTO DISNEY WORLD! We put disney world on hold for the wonderful reading talents of Jim Dale. Those audio books are AMAZING :)

I love your goals of donating books and attending bookish events! I should add those to my list :)

Good luck achieving all your goals!

  14. I love all of your goals!!! I really like number 5, I agree with you that even though you didn't like a book doesn't mean you can't write a gracious review.

  16. Reading for quality not quantity is a great goal! Also, I love re-reading, it's so great to pick up a book you know you love and re-experience all it has to offer. Great list & good luck with your goals. Happy reading in 2013 :)

I recently blogged about my 2013 goals while celebrating my blogoversary.

  17. #1 is very similar to one of my goals.

I think a lot of people forget that there is a difference between writing an honest review and bashing a book. Respect is totally possible in a negative review, and necessary. I find that I often prefer those reviews in deciding if a book is for me or not.

  18. Your goals are awesome. I particularly like the one about donating books -- nothing makes me sadder than seeing a book I'm never going to read sitting on my shelf gathering dust. Better to pass it on to someone who will read it and make it come alive again.

Good luck with your goals this year! Here's my TTT for the week. Would love for you to stop by!

  21. I like the idea of donating your used books - I have a pile at the moment that I need to pack up and take to the charity shop. I haven't been to my library in a few weeks, but I think I might have to pay them a visit this weekend and spend a while browsing their new books... :)
