In continuation of Book Blogger Appreciation Week, I am discussing today's topic: Community Part II. The book blogging world is enormous and can sometimes be intimidating and overwhelming. I think it's important to gain a sense of community with your followers, and other bloggers.
On the blog today I am listing a few outlets that have helped me in gaining that sense of community for my blog. Let me know in the comments if you share the same positive feedback from these sources, or if you have suggestions for other outlets.
Twitter - or any social media outlet! I did not use twitter until I created my book blog. It has now become the go-to outlet for getting my blog out there. I tweet every post that goes up daily. I communicate with authors, publishers, and other bloggers on a daily basis through twitter. It's the fastest & easiest way to get word out in the book blogging community. Plus it's a great place for someone like me who is "sociable" to connect with so many people, from all over the world.Goodreads - This is a great place to keep track of all your books you've read, or want to read. My goodreads shelves are my online library. It's the easiest and most effective way for me to keep track of what I read. I also enjoy it for it's purpose of being able to see what others are reading. I value certain people's ratings on books, so this is a perfect place to check out for recommendations. I have my blog linked to my goodreads account & cross reference my reviews there, as well.
TGIF at GReads - or any other weekly feature with link-ups! I know that a lot of bloggers participate in weekly meme's to gain followers and discover new blogs. It's a guaranteed way to access other blogs and welcome new faces to yours. I started TGIF here at my blog so that others could answer the weekly question on more of a personal level. It's always interesting to me to understand the blogger who reviews books on their site. The purpose of TGIF is to share a bit more about yourself, link up, and learn more about others.
Austin Teen Book Fest - or other local book events! Having access to local book events is another great way to connect with book bloggers. I live in a very book/author event friendly state of Texas. In just a few weeks I will be attending the Austin Teen Book Festival, along with a handful of other great book bloggers. Getting out and meeting people in person who share the same passion in books as you do is a great way to connect. Plus meeting your favorite authors is always a bonus!
I think the best piece of advice I can give book bloggers who are just starting out is to remember that your blog is YOUR blog. There are no rules or guidelines to follow. Just the simple act of being kind and respectful towards others. Once you've found a place in the book blogging community that feels like home to you, your voice will be heard. Book bloggers are among the nicest and most generous people I have ever met. Don't be afraid of putting yourself out there. You'll be pleasantly surprised with what you might find :-)
