My Top Ten All Time Favorite Books From The Past Three Years

It was difficult keeping this list to only ten books.  I've read some really incredible novels in the past three years, way more than ten, that would qualify as my all time faves.  The books below were read between 2012-2015 (not including what I've read so far this year).  As you can see the contemporaries dominate my list, mostly YA with a few Adults mixed in (2 from the same author!)

As always, be sure to check out The Broke and the Bookish for more details on this awesome weekly feature.

How to Love by Katie Cotugno

How to Love by Katie Cotugno
Published: October 1, 2013 by Balzer + Bray
Source: Borrowed from Tara - thank you!
Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember: as natural as breathing, as endless as time. But he's never seemed to notice that Reena even exists until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears from their humid Florida town without a word, leaving a devastated-and pregnant-Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter, Hannah. Reena's gotten used to being without Sawyer, and she's finally getting the hang of this strange, unexpected life. But just as swiftly and suddenly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. Reena doesn't want anything to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said Sawyer's being back wasn't stirring something in her. After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again? [goodreads]

Messy and complicated love.  That is exactly what this story is about.  HOW TO LOVE depicts young love during its fresh, exciting, and addicting time.  It also represents love when its being tested and stretched beyond its bounds.  HOW TO LOVE is an authentic story full of heartbreak and how to put those pieces back together.  Yes, there's a romantic story here, but there's also a bigger story about how that romance affects us and those we love.

Reena has been secretly in love with Sawyer all her life.  They've grown up close since their parents share a restaurant together.  The view that Reena has of Sawyer has always been a bit deeper than what most people see at the surface.  But its always just been that, a view far off in the distance.  While she's on the path to early graduation and getting out of town -- something she's longed for almost as long as Sawyer -- her life's plans come to a crushing halt.  An unfortunate accident occurs, bringing together Reena and Sawyer in a new, unexpected way.

The story is told in alternating chapters of a Before and After.  The Before tells the story of how Reena and Sawyer first fell in love.  Its brand new, exciting, and somewhat blind.  As Sawyer is carrying around demons of his own, he finds himself falling hopelessly and madly in love with Reena.  The After tells the story of Reena almost three years later, a teenage mom who never left this town and carries around a broken heart by her baby's father.

As the story weaves on, you begin to see how the Befores lead up to equal the Afters.  Reena and Sawyer's young love became every bit messy and oh so complicated.  There were moments that left me feeling so uneasy and heartbroken.  I wanted the two of them to be together, yet I knew as teenagers they both had a lot of living yet to do.  The writing is powerful and will grip you hardest when you least expect it to.  I could have easily read this book in one sitting, especially since my mind kept wandering back to it when I was forced to put it down.

HOW TO LOVE is not your predictable young adult fairy tale romance.  It is raw and painful, beautiful and enchanting.  These characters are littered with flaws, yet they make the story feel that much more real and authentic.  I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I think those who crave young adult literature with a heavy dose of realism and emotion will too.

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014

A new year is upon us!  2013 has definitely been a huge stepping stone for where 2014 is determined to bring me.  I am both anxious and excited to conquer this new year.  Lots of changes are in store for me personally, ones that scare me, but in a good way.  As a reader (and potential writer) I have goals for the new year that bring me joy!  I've never been one to set goals outside of my means, yet I still want to challenge myself.  The rewards from accomplishing those feats is one of the best feelings!  Here's a look back at some of my highlights from 2013, and a forward look at what's to come in 2014.

  • I read 77 books this year.  34 of those were Adult novels.
  • I wrote 30,000 words toward my first novel.
  • Got to meet two of my favorite authors this year: Jennifer Echols & Trish Doller.
  • Spent a few days in Chicago with two of my best friends: Tara & Anna.
  • Completed 3 semesters of school, making straight A's & maintaining my position on the Dean's List.
  • Began student teaching & discovered that Math isn't the worst subject to teach.
  • Dear friends of mine became Moms this year!

  • Hoping to read more than 77 books (I read the same exact number of books in 2012 & 2013!)
  • Finish my 30,000 word WIP & have the courage to share it with friends for feedback.
  • Maintain all A's, but not beat myself up if a B slips in there. It happens & that's OK.
  • Pass the two state certification exams needed to obtain my teaching certification.
  • GRADUATE COLLEGE WITH A BACHELORS IN EDUCATION!
  • Find love.
  • Take a vacation (Even if it's somewhere close, a mental & physical escape is always needed.)
  • Save money.
  • Maintain friendships with ones who matter.
  • Let go of stress as much as possible.

2013 In One Word

With the year coming to a close, I reached out to a few of my reader/writer/blogger friends and asked them to give me ONE WORD to describe their year of 2013.  It's difficult to sum up the year in just one word, I came to realize (and so did a lot of others).  Do we focus on the good? The bad? What we're most proud of? Our struggles? Or our strengths?  So much can happen in the span of one year.

The idea behind this post comes from a word wall.  In school we use this as an aid when learning new content.  Teachers display words on their wall to engage their students and help them build their vocabulary.  As a soon to be teacher myself, I thought I'd do something similar, but put a twist on it.  In this post I'm using these words as a reflection, to look back on the year and see where we've been, but also as a guide to look at where we want to go.  It's important to reflect so that we can move forward. I hope this inspires others to create their own word wall.

So tell me... which word would YOU put on
your word wall to describe the year 2013?

For those who participated in this, feel free to identify your word in the comments below.  Or keep it anonymous, whatever you like!  Can anyone guess which word is mine?  I'll give you a hint: some of life's challenges this year brought me unexpected happiness.
