She never saw it coming. Without even a shiver of suspicion to warn her, Caroline Hammond discovers that her husband is having an affair with a man—a revelation that forces her to question their entire history together, from their early days as high school sweethearts through their ten years as a happily married couple. In her now upside-down world, Caroline begins envisioning her life without the relationship that has defined it: the loneliness of being an “I” instead of a “we”; the rekindled yet tenuous closeness with her younger sister; and the unexpected—and potentially disastrous—attraction she can’t get off her mind. Caroline always thought she knew her own love story, but as her husband’s other secrets emerge, she must decide whether that story’s ending will mean forgiving the man she’s loved for half her life, or facing her future without him. [goodreads]
Just when you think you've read the best of the best from an author, they follow up with something to completely blow your mind.  Bethany Chase stole my heart with her debut, The One That Got Away. Since then I have been eagerly anticipating anything else she'd write.  There's a richness to her storytelling that has a way of grabbing me, but not in an instant choke hold -- more of a slow reach across the pages, wrapping tightly around my heart, then applying just the right amount pressure when you think you can't breathe another page.  It's gorgeous, tangible, and unputdownable. This novel left me high and satisfied, the best of the best feeling when it comes to reading.

Caroline has been married to her high school sweetheart for ten years now.  They live the picture perfect lifestyle that their friends and family have always been envious of.  Right away, Caroline's confidence was very apparent.  Not only with herself, but also in her strong marriage to Adam.  And I think that's why it became so unbelievably unbearable to understand when she discovers her husband has had an affair.  And the blows don't stop there.  It's a tumbling mess of revelations, one after the other.  Caroline is lost, confused, and utterly crushed.  She doesn't know who she is without Adam as her other half.  It became difficult to witness these really lows moments, sunk beneath her deep sorrow.

The ups and downs felt very realistic, and I appreciated how the author didn't expose the true conflict from the beginning.  As the reader you find yourself living in these moments with Caroline as she is truly conflicted on where to go from here.  How do you trust someone, even when they have shattered the very foundation of what that trust was built on, and yet still be so incredibly in love with them?  It's definitely a journey not for the weak of heart.

In the end, even after all the twists and turns that I had not been expecting and left me literally gasping out loud, I found peace right alongside Caroline.  It was not an easy conclusion to come to, nor was it finalized in those last few chapters.  But there's a sense of finality that leaves the reader satisfied, uplifted, and even full in the outcome of it all.  Bethany Chase's storytelling shines bright with this one.  I could not put it down, and ended up reading it in just under 24 hours.  Her brilliance at weaving solid, emotional, yet so identifiable characters continues.  I cannot wait to see where she takes us next.

As a fan of both books + music, I am very pleased to have author Bethany Chase sharing her writing playlist for Results May Vary as part of the blog tour. See which songs she chose, then have a listen at the bottom. Enjoy!

Writing Playlist – Results May Vary

This is an interesting thing to write about, because this book has such a different musical personality from my first book, The One That Got Away. When I was writing that, I was listening to a lot of classic soul and 70’s rock (think Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack), and that made its way into the book in many places. Results May Vary’s playlist is a lot more eclectic, both on purpose and by accident.

1- Sugar & the Hi Lows, “Right Time to Tell You”: This song is gorgeous. The melody and harmonies are about as pretty as it gets, and the lyrics are incredibly apropos to Adam’s situation—the narrator has something to confess, has been waiting for the right time to do it, but no time is ever the right time.

2- Fountains of Wayne’s gorgeous “Valley Winter Song”: This is a quintessential New-England- in-winter song for me. It talks about short, dreary winter days and snowstorms and hanging in there till the summer. (True, perfect fact: the Fountains guys are Williams alums just like Caroline and me.)

3- Band of Horses, “No One’s Gonna Love You”: Really sums up Caroline’s feelings toward Adam in the early part of the book.

4- Amos Lee, “Chill in the Air”: Another beautiful breakup song (in this one, it’s the steel guitar that cinches it), and a nod to Caroline’s predilection for mopey singer-songwriters. I think Amos is fantastic, but the man sure can write a good mopey song.

5- The Grateful Dead, “Fire on the Mountain”: This is one of my personal favorite songs that I was delighted to give to a character. I am only an entry-level Deadhead, but the guitar riff on this song is just so mellow and pretty that I could listen to it for hours. Or, you know, 13 minutes, which is the length of the longest live version of it that I own.

6- The Apache Relay, “Katie Queen of Tennessee”: Very pretty little love song from one of Jonathan’s favorite bands.

7- Jo Dee Messina, “Downtime”: Ruby wasn’t kidding that Jo Dee is the queen of upbeat breakup anthems. I’ve always loved this song because it’s about the process of recovering yourself while you get over a breakup, which is really what the book is about. I especially love the line where she says “Your memory’s taking second to a good book and a nice, long bath.”

8- Duke Ellington, “Jeep’s Blues”: this piece gets a very specific call-out in the book because good lord, is it sexy. I’ve always thought blues is the sexiest music there is. (And this stood me in good stead when one of the questions on my online dating survey was “What’s your favorite music to get you in the mood” and I referenced something about one of the Allman Brothers barn-burners, which impressed the musician who is now my husband.)

9- Rogers & Hart, “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”: I have an Ella Fitzgerald recording of this song that is one of my favorite all-time pieces of music. Ella’s voice is so beautiful, and the song’s lyrics have this sly, witty charm that—yes, I sound like an old person—you so rarely find anymore. “I’m wild again, beguiled again, a simpering, whimpering child again…” It’s such a great description of being infatuated.

10- First Aid Kit, “Emmylou”: Stunning harmonies in this song, and sweet, upbeat lyrics that remind me of Caroline and Neil. Especially where she says “I’m not asking much of you, just sing, little darling, sing with me” and “Things just don’t grow if you don’t bless them with your patience.”

Top Ten Tuesday: Debut Authors Who Have Me Looking Forward To Their Sophomore Novels

Since I missed last week's Top Ten Tuesday prompt about debut authors, who's sophomore novels we're most looking forward to, I am posting my list a week late.  This topic was too good to completely miss, so please excuse me being a week behind.  Let me know in the comments if you've read any of these debuts, and if you too are looking forward to their next novels.

1. Juliana Romano -- I read FIRST THERE WAS FOREVER earlier this year and was completely swept up by it.  It's the type of story this quiet contemporary reader really gravitates toward, full of heart and emotion, in the coming ages of being a teen.  Her sophomore novel, SUMMER IN THE INVISIBLE CITY, sounds just as fabulous -- I can't wait to read it!

2. Ellie Cahill -- Though I know this author is not a debut, as she uses this pen name for her New Adult novels, but I still decided to include her in this list because these are her first NA novels to write.  WHEN JOSS MET MATT was such a refreshing, addicting read.  I'm really looking forward to CALL ME, MAYBE, her second NA novel, because these are the type of fun, easy-going romances I crave.

3. Michelle Levy -- I'm not sure what this author is working on next, but after reading NOT AFTER EVERYTHING, I know it will be on my TBR list when it's out there.  This novel is another quietly, yet so emotional read that truly gripped me.  I have high hopes for what she plans to produce next.

4. Bethany Chase -- As the year wraps up, I already know this novel will be at the top of my favorites list, so of course I am looking forward to Bethany Chase's next novel.  THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY is everything I yearn for in adult contemporary fiction.  Everything from the depth of emotion, to the identifiable setting, to the unforgettable journey -- it all just swept me up and away.  I will read anything this woman writes.

5. Annie Cardi -- Another emotional, yet so rewarding debut that completely won me over.  THE CHANCE YOU WON'T RETURN was one of my favorite debuts read last year, so of course I am eagerly waiting to read what Annie Cardi has in store for her readers next.  I know it will be brilliant!

6. Kristin Rae -- WISH YOU WERE ITALIAN was such an adventurous, fun debut from Kristin Rae!  Her writing style captivated me in an unexpected way.  What could have been told from just the surface, delved much deeper -- casting a unique, and unforgettable story.  I am really looking forward to her sophomore novel, WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED.

7. Sarah Combs -- This list would not be complete if Sarah Combs were not on it.  Her debut novel, BREAKFAST SERVED ANYTIME was my most favorite read of 2014.  It so quietly, yet eloquently told the story of how one summer can change a young teen's life.  Her richness with words, and ability to tell an unforgettable story, pulled at my heart.  I know her next novel will be just as breathtaking.

8. Nickolas Butler -- SHOTGUN LOVESONGS was such an engrossing, beautifully told adult novel.  I listened to the audio of it and found myself sitting in my car idle, long after I reached my destination because I wasn't quite ready to turn it off.  BENEATH THE BONFIRE is sure to be amazing, I just know it, and now I must get my hands on it.

9. Ashley Poston -- Hello gorgeous book covers!  THE SOUND OF US was the perfect blend of music + romance + teenage angst for this contemporary reader.  I can't wait to read her follow up, WE OWN THE NIGHT, which I'm sure is going to be a win for me as well.

10. Jenny Kaczorowski -- Another series from Bloomsbury Spark that I am eagerly waiting to continue.  THE ART OF FALLING was a refreshing, enjoyable read and I am really looking forward to THE TRICK OF LANDING.  The So-Cal vibe is really screaming my name.

Review: The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase

The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase
Published: March 31, 2015 by Ballatine Books

Perfect for fans of Emily Giffin and Jennifer Weiner, this bright, funny debut from a fresh voice in fiction offers a delicious take on love, family, and what it means to build a home of one’s own.

Sarina Mahler thinks she has her life all nailed down: a growing architecture practice in Austin, Texas, and an any-day-now proposal from her loving boyfriend, Noah. She’s well on her way to having the family she’s hoped for since her mother’s death ten years ago. But with Noah on a temporary assignment abroad and retired Olympic swimmer — and former flame — Eamon Roy back in town asking her to renovate his new fixer-upper, Sarina’s life takes an unexpected turn.

Eamon proves to be Sarina’s dream client, someone who instinctively trusts every one of her choices — and Sarina is reminded of all the reasons she was first drawn to him back in the day. Suddenly her carefully planned future with Noah seems a little less than perfect. And when tragedy strikes, Sarina is left reeling. With her world completely upended, she is forced to question what she truly wants in life — and in love.

Full of both humor and heartbreak, The One That Got Away is the story of one woman’s discovery that, sometimes, life is what happens when you leave the blueprints behind. [goodreads]

Where do you begin a proper book review when you've just read one of the best stories of the year?  I could dive right in with my passionate cheers for a well-rounded story, bringing forth emotion I hadn't quite expected.  Or I could slowly build my love for this book layer by layer, thoroughly explaining why it's meant so much to me.  Regardless of how the words come pouring from my fingertips, I hope this review does the book justice and propels readers to get their hands on this novel asap.

The One That Got Away is set in the beautiful, eclectic city of Austin (which is also not too far from where I live).  So immediately I had a personal connection to the story.  It was so easy for me to visualize the different scenes taking place, and so fun to actually see the story come alive.  Bethany Chase did an amazing job of writing Austin into this novel.  Aside from the setting, I also connected to Sarina's voice immediately.  Close to my own age, I identified with her strong will to focus on the career she worked so hard to finally see take off, yet still enjoying the ride as it all unfolded.  She's been in a committed relationship for the past few years, with wedding bells not too far off in the distant future.  She's content with her life.  But you can also see there's something lacking.  Yes, she's happy with her present day, but when a spark from her past resurfaces, it ignites a flame she thought had burned out long ago.

As a sucker for any type of romance, I really appreciated this unique, well-written piece.  Yes, the title of this book implies that the story must revolve around a certain someone who got away, but it also digs deep into plans Sarina has let get away from her as well.  While Sarina's boyfriend takes on a job that keeps their relationship long distance, she allows herself to step back and really focus on the things that matter most to her.  I quickly identified with this theme because I can totally see how easy it is to get caught up in our every day lives, forgetting simple practices we once took pride in and let fall to the wayside.  While Sarina tackles the long distance relationship with Noah, she also begins to tackle what it is she truly wants in a relationship, as well as her future.

When "the one that got away" named Eamon takes up residence in her circle of friends, she tries to convince herself he's just a friend (as well as a client who's house she is redesigning), and not the guy she had a one night fling with so many moons ago.  Their encounters as the story progresses kept the pages smoldering.  I was secretly cheering them on, yet wondering if Sarina will truly act on anything while she's in a committed relationship.  I knew where her heart would eventually end up, but it was the journey she had to endure that made the struggles and triumphs that much more real.

The One That Got Away is a story that stuck with me for quite some time after I finished reading it.  I thought about these characters as if they were real people, wondering what they were up to.  It's the type of book you find yourself flipping back to the first chapter just after you finish, because you're not quite ready to let it go.  I adore every aspect of this story, and want to hand deliver a copy to every reader I know.  The beauty in realizing what you want, and going after what you need, is a selfless act that is so hard to master.  I applaud Bethany Chase for delivering such a well-rounded, unforgettable story that I know will be at the top of my favorites for a long time to come.

As some of you know, music is my other passion besides books. After I finished reading The One That Got Away, I heard this beautiful melody from Brandi Carlile and it immediately took me back to the novel. The harmonies are so rich and soulful, while the lyrics told a story very similar story, in my mind, to that of Sarina's. Have a listen...
