My Top Ten Books That Made Me Cry

This week's Top 10 Tuesday is a list of books that have caused me to shed a tear or two.  I am an emotional reader.  I'm an emotional person, in fact.  So it's no wonder I gravitate towards books that make me feel all sorts of things -- tears & all.  My list could definitely go further than just 10, but I tried my best to narrow it down.

What subject in a book causes you to be emotional?  If the character is experiencing something that I can relate to, and it happens to be sad, then I'll definitely grab hold of that and ride out their emotions with them.  Interestingly, most of these books on today's list are among my favorites, too.  Be sure to check out The Broke and the Bookish for more details on this awesome weekly feature.

  3. Side Effects May Vary, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Fault in Our Stars didn't really make me cry, but The Sky Is Everywhere (the letter-collecting...), Second Chance Summer and The Book of Broken Hearts (Jude's dad!) made me bawl my eyes out! Great post!

  4. Second Chance Summer was one of the most beautiful, heartbreakingly real books I have read. I still kills me and I love everything about it.

    Great list!

  5. The first time I finished God Shaped Hole was before a dentist appointment and I was just a mess. Crying so hard. I'm reading Julie's super soon & I'm interested to see if I'll have the same kind of reaction. Oh gosh. The Book of Broken Hearts. Broke MY HEART. Cried a ton. Both times I read it. EEE.

  6. These are some of my favorite reads too. I love emotional books, and I just know I'm going to love God Shaped Hole. I bought a copy last year and need to make it a priority read soon. I've had Second Chance Summer on my shelf since its release but haven't read it yet because I have the idea that it will hit too close to home? I think this year I'll read it finally.

    Love your taste in books!

  7. We do have a bunch of the same choices! I agree about Saving June (read that on a train and definitely scared people) and The Book of Broken Hearts (I think I read that at work this summer and silently prayed no one would come in while I was bawling). I finished Side Effects May Vary this morning and I kind of teared up once, but otherwise no tears for that one, even though I really, really liked it!

It's weird, I think I actually cry less at books I can relate to because they seem more...oppressive, maybe? Mostly I think I read as an escape and I think anything that hits to close to home just ruins that for me. Which I'm sure is something I'll spend years talking about with a future therapist, lol.

  8. Big ol' yes to TFIOS. Total mess. And I def shed a few tears during The Sky is Everywhere. But I haven't read the rest and I probably should, but only when I want a good cry. :D

  9. Second Chance Summer totally made me ugly cry. I seriously could not stop bawling while I was reading that book, which is what has deterred me from re-reading it ever since! I do want to eventually revisit it, but only when I'm prepared for the feels.

  10. Hmm, I don't think The Perks of Being a Wallflower made me cry, but that was such a good book! I probably cried during the movie, haha. I'm a big movie-crier. The Fault in Our Stars definitely got me. That movie is going to make me a MESS.

  14. OMG God-Shaped Hole. I'm still mad at you for having me read that because of the tears -- EVEN THOUGH I LIKED IT. PS: I still need to read Harmonic Feedback, don't I?
