My Top Ten Books I'd Recommend To Teenage Ginger

This week's Top 10 Tuesday prompt wants to know which books we'd recommend to a certain reader.  Well, considering I'm a huge YA reader as an adult, I thought I'd recommend some current YA books to the younger, less-experienced Ginger.

What about you, are there any books out there you'd recommend to a younger version of yourself? Tell me about 'em in the comments! Be sure to check out The Broke and the Bookish for more details on this awesome weekly feature.

This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales - Music is something that I have always been able to relate to, no matter what age. I remember associating certain songs with moments in my life as teen, so without a doubt I KNOW this book would have been a favorite for teenage me. [add to goodreads]

Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta - The feelings I encountered while reading this story took me to another level.  I often wonder how those feelings would have impacted me as a teen reading them. [add to goodreads]

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - I chose this book for many reasons, but mainly for the focus of college life.  I felt that Rainbow portrayed it so accurately that teenage Ginger could look to it for some symbolism of what was to come in my own college life years. [add to goodreads]

Anatomy of a Single Girl by Daria Snadowsky - I never had that fairy tale romance as a teen, even though I was always trying to seek it out with all my relationships.  I feel this book would have been an honest interpretation of how physical relationships can go... which is not always in the best direction. [add to goodreads]

The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler - It was during my teen years when my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.  I wish I'd had a book like this back then to introduce me to this disease and provide me with an honest point of view from someone my own age. [add to goodreads]

Golden by Jessi Kirby - As a teen (and even now as an adult) a question often lingered in my mind... what is my purpose? what will I make of this life?  The notebook that Parker references to in this story, that she's meant to look back on in 10 years, is a reflection I could have gained a lot from in my own life. [add to goodreads]

Just One Day by Gayle Forman - There are lots of pressures put on a teen as they leave high school and venture into young adulthood.  I chose this book for teenage Ginger because I know the messages within its pages would have resonated with a younger me.  That feeling of being lost, but wanting to live up to everyone's expectations can be overwhelming, and something I definitely identified with. [add to goodreads]

The Survival Kit by Donna Freitas - I chose this book as a foreshadowing of what would come later for teenage Ginger.  Losing a parent is something no child, especially a 22 year old, should have to endure.  But unfortunately it does happen.  I love the concept of a survival kit filled with tiny objects, along with the help of a friend, to battle the path of grief. [add to goodreads]

The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart - A girl needs a good laugh every once in awhile, and that's why I picked this book for teenage Ginger.  Ruby Oliver is the girl I wish I could have been, but never had the courage to be.  I'm hoping that maybe teenage Ginger could have absorbed a few things from this hilarious girl. [add to goodreads]

Endless Summer by Jennifer Echols - Summer teen romances is EXACTLY what teenage Ginger would have been into.  Oh wait, but so is adult Ginger, haha.  Regardless it's a theme I adore and I know my younger self would nominate this particular story as a favorite. [add to goodreads]

  7. When I read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," half of my thoughts were on how I really, really wish I could have read that book when I was a teenager. It was an incredibly moving book to read as an adult, and I can't even fathom how it would have changed me for the better if I had read it when I was a more impressionable teen.
