tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life. [goodreads]

I struggled with this book, but not in the sort of way that defines negativity.  It was the type of struggle that had me flipping the pages, yet terrified of what lies ahead.  One of the beautiful things about Shatter Me (the first book in this series) is that it concluded with a sense of finality.  Of course there were still questions lingering, and Juliette's journey was far from over, but my heart was able to beat again at a steady rate.  Unravel Me began at a quickening pace and continuously kept my heart pounding, page after page -- to the point that I thought it may leap right out of my chest!

Juliette's character definitely shifted in this second novel, for me.  Her purpose falters a bit and we discover that her gift can both hurt her, and heal her in the decisions she makes.  However, those decisions never have a chance of being made because it's one obstacle thrown in her path after another.  My favorite obstacle? That would be Warner.  Oh how I adore this man.  You're probably thinking -- what?! Isn't he the nasty villain from the first book?? Oh how clever and smart author Tahereh Mafi is.  She has the ability to take a character I loathe in one book and evolve him into the shining, adoring character in the next.  That is some powerful writing!

Just as one question may seem to have an answer, several more probabilities emerge.  There were definite surprising moments through out this secondary novel.  It opens the door just wide enough to allow assumptions to pass through, yet slams it in your face just when you think you have it figured out.  I adore stories that are this gripping and this one did not disappoint.  What will Tahereh Mafi do with the third and final book?! It's best to not assume, and prepare for more surprises.

Also, I love this book most of all because this second book totally stands on it's own. No middle book syndrome here!

  7. I had to read this one in small doses because of that struggle - not a negative struggle, as you mention, just because of all of the STUFF that is coming from everywhere and shifting perspectives and loyalties and just everything. I'd have to read a few pages and then think on them for a day or two, then repeat. I did this until I was done. It was a wonderfully written book, and I am astounded at the talent of Tahereh Mafi to be able to "manipulate" (I say manipulate lightly.) people so easily by giving Warner a reason for his actions in the Destroy Me novella and a swagger in Unravel Me. I cannot wait to see how everything ends up in the final book. I have all ideas it will be one big fun ride.
