Giving Thanks: Top Ten Style

Ten Things Ginger is Thankful for this Year:

1. My job. - it may not be glamorous, but it's a job & it pays the bills.  With today's job market & economy I am ever so grateful to be employed.

2. My health. - taking care of myself is becoming a higher priority for me. I want to be able to enjoy life, not just pass the time.

3. My family. - they are the people who know me best & offer support when I need it most.  I'm grateful for them in my life, every day.

4. My friends. - over the last year my range of friends has grown tremendously from book blogging. Some of my very best friends are people I talk books with.  I appreciate their friendship.

5. Daisy. - this dog may give me head aches from time to time, but it's her sweet face I come home to every day.  I swear she understands me ;-)

6. Music. - I listen to it on the daily & can't imagine a world without it.  Because of music, it's brought an amazing band in to my life: SafetySuit & with that came an experience I will never forget.

7. My books. - as if I could make this list & not include them?  Books have the ability to take my imagination to places I never thought I'd go.  They are more than just words on pages to me, they are a catapult for my life and where I want it to go.

8. My education. - in the last year I've learned that it's never too late to go back to school.  I'm grateful for the support of my family in encouraging me to pursue my goals of becoming a teacher.

9. My ability to laugh. - I've realized that when things may be tough, having the ability to laugh can do wonders for the soul.  I find humor in lots of things, so I'm grateful for the people in my life who constantly make me laugh!

10. ALL OF YOU. - yes, I am thankful for my faithful followers who come back day after day to read what I have to blog about.  You are the reason I love to share all my bookish happenings.  So thank you, for that.

I hope you all (Americans that is) are enjoying your Thanksgiving holiday with family & friends.  I plan to stuff my belly with turkey & dressing deliciousness -- and don't forget the sweet potato casserole, my favorite!!

Give Thanks

Since we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the US during the month of November, I thought I would host a weekly meme about 'giving thanks'.

If you'd like to participate, just post a link back to my blog on your website & please let me know in the comment below.. thanks! =)

This week I am GIVING THANKS to all those who make Thanksgiving meal the yummy feast that it is!  I was privileged to grow up in a household with a mom who put Martha Stewart & Betty Crocker to shame!  My mother was the BEST cook, hands down.  I say was because my mother is no longer with us.  She passed away from cancer in 2003.  My Thanksgiving feasts have not been the same since, but my sisters and I have tried our hardest to recreate them as best we can.  From the homemade gravy, to the sizzling turkey, to the scrumptious stuffing - it was always made with love & I think that's the yummiest ingredient of all!  So THANK YOU to those who spend time in the kitchen preparing a meal for the ones they love.

I'm curious.. what is served at your Thanksgiving feast?  Who does the cooking in your household?
The menu for my family's feast usually consists of the following:
  • Turkey (with homemade gravy)
  • Cornbread dressing
  • Rice dressing (it's a cajun thing & oh so yummy!)
  • Greenbean casserole
  • Sweet potato casserole (my contribution to the meal - it's the best!)
  • Dinner rolls
  • Cranberry sauce (I prefer the kind that looks like jello!)
  • And for dessert: pumpkin pie, pecan pie, or cheesecake!

This week I am GIVING THANKS to those people who inspire us to keep reading!  When I was growing up books were not an important part of my life.  Even though I had a very solid & fulfilling upbringing, I sometimes feel like I cheated myself out of reading.  I wonder where my life would have gone if I had discovered my love for books at an earlier age.  I really admire those who advocate reading to our younger generations.  Reading for me is the best antidote to any ailment.  Literature can take you a million miles away in just a turn of a page.  The lessons being learned inside these book bindings are unmeasurable.  Books are so important and they really can bring people together.  I am thankful for those who understand that & appreciate it, and continue to inspire more people to open a book.  I recently made a career change at almost 30 years old, to become a middle school teacher.  Nothing gives me more drive or inspiration than having the ability to encourage young adults to read more.  I hope to make positive influences one day, by simply saying... "open a book!"

So tell me.. who inspired YOU to read books? Was it a former teacher? a friend? your parents? or perhaps a stranger?  I'd love to hear your stories!

This week I am GIVING THANKS to all those *swoon* worthy boys in YA lit!  I'm not sure some of these books would even make it if it weren't for them.  For us older girls, they remind us what young love is like.  To feel that sudden bolt of lightning shot through you every time he enters the room, or casually touches your arm.  The heat rising when he discards an article of clothing, only to reveal that solid hard bod!  Those witty comments & sarcastic humor that makes us want to slap him through the pages, but only to grab him & never let go.  These boys can melt any girl's heart & leave us speechless.  They can get under our skin & never leave our minds.  So thank you awesome YA authors for writing such characters that we undoubtedly swoon over!

Just a few boys who made my list:
  • Edward - Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer
  • Jace - The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
  • Sam - Shiver series by Maggie Stiefvater
  • Patch - Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick
  • Alex - Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles
  • Wesley - The Duff by Kody Keplinger
  • Roger - Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson
  • Jordan - Two-way Street by Lauren Barnholdt
...and my list continues!

This week I am GIVING THANKS to the wonderful book blogs who have inspired me to start my own.  If you have not already checked out Jess Hearts Books or YA Reads, then I suggest you do.  Jess really helped me get started on this whole thing -- and I must admit, I used her book blog as a template for mine -- so THANK YOU! you've been a big help!  I'm still an active member of YA Reads forum & am thankful for all the wonderful followers over there who have pushed me to start talking about books on my own site!  I never knew there were so many people out there who read & enjoy all the same books I do.

There are plenty more book blogs that I check regularly & continue to inspire me further :-) A few of them are...
Anna Reads
That Cover Girl
Blkosiner's Book Blog
Books with Bite
Friendly Reader
Good Golly Miss Holly
Miss Page Turner's City of Books
