YA at the Movies in 2014

Who else is super pumped for all the YA books being brought to the big screen this year?!  I'm excited, but nervous too.  Will the adaptation do the book justice?  Or will it give a new spin on the written story?  The three listed below have gotten a ton of hype and I am so anxious to see their faces that I've always pictured in my head be brought to life on the big screen.  The last movie isn't a YA book, but it IS from the genius mind of someone who has written a YA book. So there's that.  Plus it's VERONICA MARS and since I'm a proud kickstarter backer of the movie, I've gotta show it some love on the blog.

About the book: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her. About the book: Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind. About the book: In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck...

A sophisticated, layered, and heart-achingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make, and the ultimate choice Mia commands. [goodreads]

  3. Veronica Mars is #1 for me (bought my tickets and can't wait!), but I'm looking forward to TFIOS too. I loved the book and one of my new fav. comedians, Mike Birbiglia, is in the movie (as Patrick) :) I'm kind of meh on Divergent - I'll see it, but I could take it or leave it. The first book was the only one I really liked in the series. It's kind of like Twilight for me, I'll see it b/c I read the books but I'm not OMG EXCITED about it.

  4. I am so intrigued by IF I STAY but I'm also wary because I feel like Chloe might not be quite right for the role. But at least it's not Shailene Woodley again, amirite?!

Also, while I am sincerely excited to see Divergent, it freaks my shiz that the actor who plays Augustus in TFIOS plays her brother in Divergent. WHY?!

  5. I am SUPER excited to see all FOUR of these films this year! I've read and loved the books for the first three, so it should be interesting to see how well it translates on to screen in terms of character and story.

As for Veronica Mars, I'm most definitely watching it -- but mostly because my sister is a HUGE fan and would kick me in the butt if I didn't. I still have to watch the show!

  7. I was super worried about Divergent when I saw who would be playing Tris. Bleh, the girl from secret life. But now that I have gotten over the intial shock of it, I think that I will be checking out the movie because Divergent was just too awesome.

  9. There are several movie adaptations I want to see this year but I'm not sure that I want to see any of these! (Actually, I've never seen Veronica Mars before - don't hit me! - so I really can't comment on that one) but the others I just don't think are theater movies for me! I AM IN THE VAST MINORITY, I KNOW. I'm too afraid to even watch the TFIOS trailer, to be honest. EEK.

  11. I'm so so so excited for all these movies (though I have to admit that I have to watch Veronica Mars before I see the movie. So pumped to become a part of that fandom though!). I'm a little bit worried about Divergent, especially with the recent slumps of Vampire Academy, Beautiful Creatures, The Host, etc, but fingers crossed it does well!

Ahhh If I Stay! I had no idea that its movie is coming out this year. I just finished reading that one so I'm SO excited for the movie. Can't wait for the trailer to be released!

Pretty pumped for The Fault in Our Stars though. John Green's opinions and the trailer are making it sound like it's going to be good. ;)
